“She Holds a World in Her Hand” | 48” x 72”
This piece represents a surrealistic interpretation of feminine power as it relates to the environment. I wanted to create a visually appealing, larger-than-life representation of this idea: one that is impossible to ignore and filled with the colors of the natural world, especially water and air. I also wanted to say through this piece that we are all inter-connected in a delicate dance of spheres that could fall at any moment, should we ignore any one of them. A final nod to this idea can be seen in the blending of the foreground and background. In other words, there isno background, per se; no separation of action and re-action, no people without water, plants, energy. This delicate interplay of each with one another is what I hoped to capture, and women are our hope for the future.
My idea of creating a painting in this vein began after I read an article from the Yale Program on Climate Change:
“Women in leadership positions can foster climate policy solutions. A study on gender equality and state-level environmentalism found that, across 130 countries, women in government positions were more likely to sign on to international treaties to reduce global warming than men. Promoting the participation of diverse women in leadership positions, as well as climate science, can also inspire young women to participate too.”
This piece was featured in The Fulton Street Collective’s sold out show: ‘Divine Femininity’ on Friday, November 13th. Curated by Dail Kirkpatrick.
